Bohemian interior design is rooted in a simplified approach to the French Boheme theme or the gypsy lifestyle. The theme is considered free, artistic, and somewhat eclectic. One of the greatest features of the Bohemian interior design is that no two Boho themes are identical. This is because the style largely depends on the homeowner’s design preferences and personal style. Your personal choices are inspirations are predominantly evident from this style, giving it a unique and creative outlook. Here are some tips on creating that perfect bohemian aesthetic for your interior spaces at home.

Play around with textures

The soul of bohemian interior design lies in the principle of variety.

Playing around with different textures and materials brings on artistic and eclectic vibes. This is a great way to add some sense of character to the space you’re redesigning or redecorating. Bohemian design is all about a variety of textures. It isn’t something that you can put in a box and properly categorize or identify. It can be a myriad of different things and different designs and textures, and there’s no hard rule to it.

Case in point, in this space designed by Swiss Interior, we brought in a hodgepodge of different textures from the wicker backing on the dining chairs and a long bench paired along with it, the jute grass frame of the mirror to the smooth wood panelling in the cabinets and floors, and even the painted brass in the ceiling fixtures. You too can easily recreate the look by playing around with varying textures in the furniture and design pieces that you include in the space. You may also include colourful floor rugs, baskets, macramé pieces, and so on. Nothing is too much in such a style!

Go with low seats

Bohemian interior design banks on the philosophy of kicking it back and relaxing and that can be easily achieved by going low with the seating. In this space we’ve designed, we opted for a low couch and a long bench in place of typical dining chairs to stay true to that said philosophy. It instantly transforms the space and makes it so much more relaxed and at ease. You can easily incorporate this style into your home as well. You can include bean bags, floor pillows, or even footstools that double over as alternative seating space. This creates a great space where you can invite people to sit down and hang out for a while and is certainly a great addition to a space that entertains people.

Veer away from the black color

Dark colors such as blacks, grays, and dark browns can look visually heavy and that isn’t what bohemian interior design is about. It would be best to avoid using such dark and dull colours or to at least be very frugal when incorporating these colors as it may go against your boho design.

Boho is all about bright and interesting colours, warmth and variety, so play along those lines. In the space we’ve designed pictured below, the area has a good combination of colours from the red on the rug to the green couch, to the green accent wall, and even to the black ceiling fans. The idea is to create character and a somewhat energetic vibe that at the same time aims to relax the residents. It only sounds complicated in concept but the reality is that it’s one of the easiest things you can throw together because there aren’t really any hard rules.

Incorporate indoor plants

And since we’re all about relaxing here, what better things to include than plants! Plants are elements you can easily add in to create a somewhat “jungle” vibe to the space without going too crazy with it. They’re natural, they can keep the place cool, and they’re overall just amazing to have around; particularly when you’re creating that bohemian interior design theme.

In the space pictured below, we kept it simple and on the down low by having some greenery in a vase but you can totally shake it up with any plants of your liking. Hanging plants are also pretty great to have around and can add a lot of textural interest to the space. Go with plants that don’t need a lot of maintenance so that you don’t have to worry too much about the upkeep.
